Sometimes translators prefer to translate offline using familiar CAT tools. Instead of granting translators download/upload rights, use the Offline translation feature.
Getting started
To get started with offline translation, it should be enabled in the project settings by a project admin. To achieve that, click More > Settings in the top menu, and proceed to the General tab. Tick the Offline translation option under the Miscellaneous section and save the changes:
Once the feature is enabled, all users will see the offline translation widget in the editor while in bilingual editing mode.
Use the following controls to switch to the bilingual view and then use the language dropdowns to choose the source and target languages:
Downloading and uploading XLIFF
From the Offline translation widget users can choose the following options:
Download all as XLIFF — download an XLIFF file with all translations for the currently chosen target language. Downloaded XLIFF files will include links to screenshots, keys description, and translation statuses.
Download filtered as XLIFF — download an XLIFF file with target translations for the filtered keys. This option will become available only if you've applied a filter.
Upload translated XLIFF — upload an XLIFF file with translations to the current project. Uploading an XLIFF file will replace all existing translations with those in the file being uploaded. Filename and platform attributes relating to keys will not be changed.
Special notes
Offline translation in tasks
If a project has Offline translations enabled, every task you create will include Download XLIFF and Upload XLIFF buttons (on the Tasks page):
The translations you download will include all languages in a single ZIP file.
Offline translation with branching
Please note that if you have project branching feature enabled, there are certain restrictions to the XLIFF files uploading process. Specifically, if you have downloaded the offline translation file from branch_a, this file can only be uploaded to branch_a but not to any other branches. Similarly, a file downloaded from branch_b can be uploaded only to branch_b, but not to branch_a.
Offline translation and Trados Studio
If you are using Trados Studio it's advised to enable Do not store segmentation information in the translated file option which can be found under Options > File types > XLIFF > Settings. Otherwise your XLIFF file won't be properly imported to Lokalise.
This option is available on a general level as well as on a project level. To find it in the project level, proceed to Project settings > File types > XLIFF > Settings.
