IDML (InDesign Markup Language) files are used by Adobe InDesign to store and manage layout information for various types of documents, including brochures, magazines, and books. Lokalise supports IDML files, enabling users to translate and manage the content within these design files.

Technical information

Overview

Format name:
InDesign Markup Language (IDML)

File extensions:
.idml

Common use cases:
Managing and translating layout and content for design-heavy documents such as brochures, magazines, and books created with Adobe InDesign.

Technical details:

  • Structure: IDML files are XML-based and consist of multiple interrelated files compressed into a single ZIP package. These files contain information about the document’s layout, styles, text, and other elements.

  • Encoding: UTF-8

Example:
Here's an example of the content structure within an IDML file:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="yes"?>
<idPkg:Story xmlns:idPkg="http://ns.adobe.com/AdobeInDesign/idml/1.0/packaging" DOMVersion="8.0">
<Story Self="u1e4" AppliedTOCStyle="n" TrackChanges="false" StoryTitle="$ID/" StoryType="Article">
<TextFrame Self="u1e4" ParentStory="u1e3">
<Content>
<ParagraphStyleRange AppliedParagraphStyle="ParagraphStyle/$ID/NormalParagraphStyle">
<CharacterStyleRange AppliedCharacterStyle="CharacterStyle/$ID/NormalCharacterStyle">
<Content>
<br />
This is sample content within an IDML file.
</Content>
</CharacterStyleRange>
</ParagraphStyleRange>
</Content>
</TextFrame>
</Story>
</idPkg:Story>

In this example, the IDML file includes a story element with nested text frame and content elements, defining the text and its styles within the document.
