Note: This article describes how translation assets work in Lokalise Vantage. Translation memories and glossaries are also available in Lokalise Expert, but the interface and workflow differ. If you are using Lokalise Expert, see Translation memory and Glossary.
This article explains how translation assets work in Lokalise Vantage and how to manage them.
Vantage uses two types of translation assets:
Translation Memory (TM)
Glossary
These assets help improve translation quality and maintain consistent terminology across languages. Both are managed from the Assets page in Vantage. You can also add glossary terms during project creation if needed.
Where to manage translation assets
Translation assets in Vantage are managed from the Assets page.
The page includes separate tabs for Translation memory and Glossary. From there, you can:
view the translation memories available to Vantage
manage entries in the Vantage Primary Translation Memory
import TMX files into the Vantage Primary Translation Memory
add glossary terms manually or upload them from a CSV file
manage existing glossary entries
When creating a Vantage project, you configure which translation memories the project uses. The Vantage Primary Translation Memory is always included for reading and saving translations. You can also add other available translation memories as read-only sources and arrange them by priority.
The same translation memory settings can be changed later in the project settings.
Special notes
The glossary is shared across Vantage projects in the team and is applied automatically.
Translation memories are available across the team, but additional TMs must be assigned to individual Vantage projects before they are used for translation suggestions.
Changes to translation assets or project TM settings are not applied retroactively to translations that have already been generated.
The Vantage Assets page does not provide export controls. TM storages can be downloaded from Team settings > Translation memory.
Translation memory
Vantage can use multiple translation memories (TMs) to reuse previously approved translations and provide translation suggestions.
Translation memories are shared across Lokalise Expert and Vantage, so TMs created or updated in Expert can also be used in Vantage projects. Vantage also includes a dedicated Vantage Primary Translation Memory, which is used by default for all Vantage projects and stores translations saved from Vantage projects, including human-approved translations.
Each Vantage project can use additional translation memories as read-only sources. You can choose which TMs to use and set their priority when creating the project or later in the project settings.
Translation memories available in Vantage
Open Assets > Translation memory to view the translation memories available in Vantage.
The list can include several types of translation memory:
Vantage Primary Translation Memory — a dedicated TM only for Vantage. It is used by default in Vantage projects and stores translations approved in Vantage.
Expert Primary Translation Memory — the primary translation memory used by Lokalise Expert. Expert Primary Translation Memory corresponds to the default Lokalise Translation Memory in Expert. Vantage does not currently support custom language codes in shared translation memories, so this TM may show fewer entries in Vantage than in Expert.
Custom translation memories — additional TMs created for your team. These can also be made available to Vantage projects.
Translation memories are shared between Lokalise Expert and Vantage. For example, when new translations are added to a shared TM in Expert, they become available in Vantage automatically. There may be a short delay before changes appear.
The Vantage Primary Translation Memory is kept separate from the Expert primary TM. This gives Vantage its own default storage for approved translations, without mixing them with translations that may be added to Expert TMs through other workflows.
Note: Vantage does not currently support custom language codes in shared translation memories. Because of this, a shared TM may show fewer entries in Vantage than in Expert.
Manage translation memory storages
Translation memory storages are managed at the team level. To create, upload, download, clear, or delete a TM storage, open Team settings > Translation memory.
These management actions are available to team admins, billers, and owners. For detailed instructions, see Translation memory.
The Assets > Translation memory page in Vantage is used to view the TMs available to Vantage and manage supported Vantage-specific TM content and settings.
Manage translation memory entries
You can view translation memory content from the Assets > Translation memory page in the Vantage sidebar.
This is a Vantage workspace page and is separate from Team settings > Translation memory, where team-level TM storages are created, downloaded, cleared, or deleted.
You can browse entries in all translation memories available to Vantage. However, editing, deleting, and importing TMX content is currently supported only for the Vantage Primary Translation Memory. Other shared translation memories are read-only in Vantage.
Select Vantage Primary Translation Memory to manage its content.
At the top of the page, use the search field to find source phrases stored in the translation memory. Search is fuzzy, so the results may also include similar phrases.
Translation memory units and entries
Translation memory content is organized into units and entries.
A translation memory unit contains a source text and all translations associated with it. The source language appears as the parent item, with translations into individual target languages listed underneath.
Each source-to-target translation within the unit is a separate translation memory entry.
For example, one unit may contain:
an English source
a Russian translation
a German translation
a French translation
The Russian, German, and French translations are separate entries within the same translation memory unit.
The list also shows available metadata, such as who added or updated a translation and when it was created or changed.
Edit translation memory entries
To edit content in the Vantage Primary Translation Memory:
Find the source text you want to update.
Open the more options menu for the translation memory unit.
Select Edit.
In the edit dialog, you can:
update the source text
update existing translations
add translations for additional languages
When finished, click Save entry.
Delete translation memory content
You can delete either an individual translation entry or the entire translation memory unit.
To remove a single translation, open the options for that target-language entry and delete it. Other translations belonging to the same source remain in the TM.
To remove the source and all associated translations, open the options for the parent source item and delete the entire translation memory unit.
Deleting TM content does not change translations that have already been generated in Vantage. The deleted content will no longer be available for future TM matches and suggestions.
Currently, it is not possible to delete all entries from the Vantage Primary Translation Memory in a single operation.
Assign translation memories to a project
When creating a Vantage project, you can choose which translation memories the project will use.
The Vantage Primary Translation Memory is always included and cannot be removed. It is used for both:
Read — Vantage searches it for translation memory matches and suggestions. TM entries are also used when AI translates your content.
Save — approved translations from the project are saved to this TM.
You can click Add translation memory to include additional shared TMs. Additional TMs are currently used for Read only and are not available as save targets.
If multiple TMs are assigned, drag and drop them to change their priority. Vantage checks higher-priority translation memories first when looking for matches and suggestions.
After the project is created, you can update the same configuration from the project settings. You can add or remove read-only TMs and change their priority.
Changes to the TM configuration apply to translations generated after the settings are updated. Existing translations are not regenerated automatically.
Note: Vantage currently saves approved translations only to the Vantage Primary Translation Memory. Saving to other shared translation memories is not supported.
Translation memory suggestions in the editor
When a translation memory match is found for a segment, it appears in the Assets panel in the Vantage editor.
The suggestion shows the match percentage, source and target text, and metadata such as who added the translation, when it was added or updated, and which translation memory storage it comes from.
How approvals work with translation memory
In Lokalise Vantage, not all “approved” segments are treated the same when it comes to saving content to the translation memory. Understanding the difference between approval types is key to ensuring translations are stored correctly.
Approval types explained
There are three types of approval in Vantage:
AI Approved — the segment was translated and passed AI LQA checks. Not saved to TM.
Human Approved — the segment was manually approved by a user. Automatically saved to TM.
TM Approved — the segment comes from existing translation memory.
All three appear as a green checkmark in the UI. To distinguish between them, use filters.
When is a segment saved to TM?
A segment is saved to the translation memory only when it is manually approved by a user.
This means:
AI-approved segments are not saved to TM by default
You must take an explicit action to convert them into human-approved
How to save AI-approved segments to TM
If a segment already has a green checkmark (AI-approved):
Click the green checkmark → it becomes unapproved (grey)
Click it again → it becomes approved again
After the second click:
The segment is now human-approved
The translation is saved to TM
Alternative: using the save icon
If you see a greyed-out save icon next to a segment:
Click it once → The segment is saved to TM immediately
What happens after editing a segment
If you edit a segment:
Its approval is reset (no longer considered approved for TM)
You must manually approve it again to save the updated version to TM
Important notes on approvals
Pressing Enter does not save a segment to TM
Saving to TM always requires manual approval or explicit save action
Bulk actions for saving to TM are not yet available
Glossary
A Glossary defines important terms that should be translated consistently across languages. Glossary entries help ensure that product names, brand terms, and other key phrases are translated correctly and consistently.
Importing glossary entries from Lokalise Expert
If you already maintain a glossary in Lokalise Expert, you can export it and import it into Vantage.
To export a glossary:
Open your Lokalise Expert project.
Go to the Glossary tab.
Click More > Download CSV.
Once downloaded, upload the CSV file on the Assets > Glossary page in Vantage.
Creating a glossary file from scratch
You can also create a glossary file manually in CSV format and upload it to Vantage as explained in the Glossary article.
If you need help validating or preparing glossary files, you can use the Lokalise Glossary Guard CLI tool, which can check and correct glossary CSV files before importing them. Also, you can take advantage of the Glossary Guard web version.
Add glossary terms manually
You can also add glossary entries directly in Vantage without uploading a CSV file.
To do so, open the Assets > Glossary page and click Add term.
This opens the Add glossary term dialog where you can configure a new glossary entry.
Term — enter the term. This is typically a brand name, product name, or important terminology that should follow specific rules.
Description (optional) — you can add a short description to provide context for translators or reviewers.
Non-translatable — when enabled, the term should remain unchanged in translated content.
Case sensitive — ensures the rule applies only when the term matches the exact letter casing.
Add another — if enabled, the dialog stays open after the term is created so you can quickly add multiple glossary entries.
Once the information is filled in, click Add term to save the entry. The term immediately becomes part of the shared Vantage glossary and is used during future translations in Vantage projects.
Manage glossary terms
After uploading a glossary file or adding terms manually, all entries become visible on the Assets > Glossary page.
Each glossary entry represents a key term and the rules that apply to it during translation. The list also shows whether the term is case-sensitive, non-translatable, and which languages it applies to.
At the top of the page, you can use the search field to quickly find specific glossary terms.
Edit glossary terms
To modify an existing term:
Locate the term in the glossary list.
Click the edit icon next to the entry.
This opens the Edit term dialog where you can update:
the term itself
translation rules for specific languages
properties such as non-translatable or case-sensitive
Once your changes are complete, click Save to update the entry.
Delete glossary terms
If a glossary entry is no longer needed, you can remove it directly from the glossary list.
Locate the term you want to remove.
Click the delete icon next to the entry.
The term will be removed from the glossary and will no longer influence future translations. This operation won't affect any existing translations.
Remove all glossary entries
If needed, you can also remove all glossary entries at once. Open the more options menu in the glossary page header and choose the option to delete all glossary entries.
This clears the shared Vantage glossary.
