What AI-powered features are available in Lokalise?
We offer several AI solutions designed to speed up and improve your localization workflows:
AI Translations
Create bulk translation tasks that automatically leverage project context (glossary, style guide, task instructions). Translations are fast, consistent, and ready to use at scale.AI LQA (Localization Quality Assurance)
A task type that evaluates translations automatically against your context and style rules, helping you spot errors, inconsistencies, or deviations from brand guidelines.AI Suggestions
Generate contextual translation suggestions directly in the editor. You can:Choose from multiple AI-generated variants
Rephrase or shorten existing translations
Quickly improve draft translations without leaving the workflow
Translation quality scoring
Quickly check the accuracy of target translations. Get instant, data-driven QA directly in the editor.Custom AI profiles
Enhance AI output by providing your own data as context. Custom profiles pull examples from your translation memory (TM) and existing translations to match your tone of voice and previous work. Assign profiles to specific projects or language pairs so AI translations stay consistent with your brand style.
What is Standard AI/MT and Pro AI?
Learn more in the What is Standard AI/MT and Pro AI? article.
Lokalise offers two AI translation tiers: Standard AI/MT and Pro AI.
Standard AI/MT uses systems like Google Translate and DeepL focused on speed, volume, and simplicity. It’s best for quick or repetitive content where perfect tone isn’t essential.
Pro AI builds on that with advanced language models (e.g. ChatGPT, Claude), context awareness, automatic engine selection, and quality scoring. Ideal for high-visibility content and brand-sensitive translations.
Please note that Pro AI is available only on selected plans.
What context AI uses when performing translations and quality assurance?
It depends on the specific feature:
AI Translations and AI LQA use:
Task description
Project glossary entries (when applicable)
AI Suggestions use:
Translation context provided by the user (via the Add context button)
Project glossary entries (when applicable)
Enterprise customers can create and manage Custom AI profiles to define what extra data the AI should as context use during translation.
You can configure profiles to draw from:
Translation memory (TM) entries for selected language pairs
Existing translations already made in your projects
Once assigned to a project or language pair, these profiles enrich AI tasks and suggestions with real examples from your team’s work improving consistency, tone, and brand alignment.
Does AI respect character limits?
Find more info in the Character limits article.
Yes. If a translation exceeds the character limit set for a translation key on Lokalise, the system automatically retries with an alternative model (up to two attempts) to generate a version that fits.
Why not just use ChatGPT for translations and QA?
ChatGPT is a great general-purpose AI tool but it’s not designed for localization at scale. Our AI solutions are purpose-built for translation and localization workflows offering:
Higher quality – human-level translations with an 80%+ first-pass acceptance rate (vs. ~60% with ChatGPT).
Automation and speed – translate thousands of strings in minutes, with review and quality controls built in.
Centralized workflow – no copy-pasting. Manage all languages, glossaries, and style guides in one platform.
Enterprise readiness – security, scalability, and integrations with 60+ tools.
In short: use ChatGPT for quick, low-stakes drafts. Use our AI solutions when you need publish-ready, consistent, and secure translations at scale.
How does Lokalise AI Translations work?
Our AI uses advanced large language models, including GPT-5, Claude, and others, to assist with content translation. On top of these models, Lokalise adds its own optimization layer to improve the precision and accuracy of your translations.
For example, you can provide context such as glossary terms, style guides, or custom instructions during task creation. Our AI takes this information into account, ensuring that terms and phrases are translated in line with your project’s requirements.
Behind the scenes, Lokalise also applies smart routing across multiple LLMs — an industry-first approach that automatically selects the most suitable model for your language pair and content type. This helps guarantee that you always get the best possible quality without needing to manually choose an engine.
How is usage measured?
Learn more in the Processed words and Team quotas articles.
Lokalise tracks two separate quotas: Machine Translation words and Pro AI words.
Both are measured in processed words, meaning you’re only charged for the number of words actually translated by an AI engine.
These quotas apply at the team level, covering all projects in the team.
What types of content can be translated using AI?
Our AI solutions are incredibly versatile and can handle a wide range of content types, including websites, documents, emails, marketing materials, user-generated content, and more. It can adapt to different industries and content formats, making it the perfect solution for businesses aiming to reach global audiences.
Does AI support locales with regional codes?
Yes. Pro AI does take locale and region into account, but only if your project language is configured with the correct regional code. When using Pro AI, make sure that your project language is set with the regional code you actually need.
This can directly affect the output. For example:
If you pick “Portuguese” (pt), the AI may translate into Brazilian Portuguese by default.
If you specifically need Portugal Portuguese, make sure your project uses Portuguese (Portugal),
pt_PT.
Can I choose which AI model will be used?
No as there's no need to manually select a model. Lokalise automatically handles this through smart routing. By evaluating the context, language pair, and content type, Lokalise decides which model (e.g., GPT-5, Claude, or another) is the best fit. This approach ensures you always benefit from the highest quality and precision while avoiding the guesswork of choosing between models yourself.
Why don't you build your own AI model instead of using third-party LLMs?
Creating a foundational LLM from scratch would be resource-heavy and slower to improve. Instead, Lokalise leverages the best-performing models available (e.g., GPT, Claude, and others) and enhances them with our proprietary orchestration:
Smart routing dynamically selects the best model for each language pair and context.
Custom AI profiles use retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) to adapt outputs to your brand and terminology.
This approach achieves 90%+ acceptance rates from human reviewers, while keeping pace with the rapid evolution of LLM technology.
In short: we focus on delivering quality and innovation, not reinventing the wheel.
How accurate are AI-powered translations?
AI translations can vary depending on factors like language pair and content complexity. But based on feedback from our customers, we can give you a ballpark estimation of around 80% accuracy. In most cases, you might just need to make minor changes for the remaining 20% to make it perfect for your specific needs.
Can AI handle translations of highly specialized or technical content?
Absolutely! Our AI can handle translations of highly specialized or technical content. Our AI models are trained to understand complex terminology, ensuring accurate translations even for the most specialized industries.
Will AI overwrite existing translations?
If a key is added to an AI Translation task, its existing translations will be overwritten. The only exception is when you enable the Apply 100% translation memory matches option. In this case, the AI will attempt to find exact (100%) matches in the translation memory. If a match is found, it will be used right away, and the AI words quota won't be affected.
How will my data be used?
When you use our AI solutions, only the content required for the feature is processed. For example:
AI Translations / AI Suggestions: source text, key description, glossary terms, and any provided context.
AI LQA: source text, target translations, key descriptions, and glossary terms.
We may use this data for machine learning unless you withdraw your consent. This helps us develop new AI-powered features and improve existing ones.
Are AI solutions secure and private?
Yes. Our AI solutions are designed with enterprise-grade security and strict privacy controls:
All data in transit between Lokalise and AI providers is encrypted with TLS.
Translated content is only accessible to authorized personnel and securely deleted after use.
Translations are never used for training AI models.
By default, Lokalise has opted out of any data sharing for training purposes.
Provider policies:
OpenAI (GPT models): 30-day retention for abuse monitoring only. Data is never used for training.
Anthropic (Claude models): Zero data retention — content is not stored.
Both providers are ISO 27001, SOC 2 Type II, and GDPR compliant.
